A Lan Ha Bay luxury cruise buys you a bigger cabin with a balcony, usually a bathtub, a pool or jacuzzi and more space on deck. It does not buy you a different bay: the luxury ships anchor in the same lagoons, visit the same Dark and Bright Cave and Ao Ech (Frog Lake) as mid-range boats, and most check in at the same marina at Tuan Chau in Ha Long. Choose by cabin, ship age and what the fare really includes.

Below: the ships that actually sail Lan Ha (vịnh Lan Hạ, the bay east of Cat Ba Island), their prices and who each one suits. For the cheaper end, see budget cruises; for a ranked list across all classes, see best Lan Ha Bay cruises.

What "luxury" means on Lan Ha, and why "6-star" is only a label

Vietnam rates tourist accommodation vessels on a voluntary scale of 1★ to 5★ under the Law on Tourism (article 50) and the TCVN 9372:2012 standard. There is no 6-star class, and no Lan Ha ship has been shown to hold an official 4★ or 5★ decision. When a listing says "6-star cruise", read it as "marketed as 6-star". You can check the law text at hoatieu.vn.

What does separate the luxury class is concrete and checkable:

  • Every cabin has a balcony or terrace, and most have a bathtub.
  • A pool (Elite of the Seas, Azura, Capella, Peony, Heritage Line) or at least a large jacuzzi.
  • Newer steel hulls. Elite of the Seas (2022) has a steel double hull; Paradise Grand (2020) is steel. Wooden hulls are still legal, and both tourist-boat accidents of 2026 involved wooden boats.
  • Smaller numbers per ship on the boutique end: Heritage Line Ylang has 10 suites and Orchid Premium only 5.

Size is not exclusivity: Celina of the Sea has 62 suites and 180 guests.

The luxury ships that really sail Lan Ha

Several "luxury Ha Long and Lan Ha" products spend their whole programme in Ha Long Bay. Hera's Boutique and Grand 2D1N, Paradise Elegance and Legacy, Cozy Bay Grand and La Regina Classic (Bai Tu Long Bay) are not Lan Ha cruises. The ships below anchor and do their activities on the Lan Ha side.

Lan Ha Bay luxury cruise prices: platforms vs direct

Most luxury ships sell from about $155 to $225 per person for one night, twin share. The top end is Heritage Line: Ginger from 423 USD per person for one night (321 USD with the early-bird rate, booked at least 120 days ahead) and Ylang's two-night circuit from 837 USD per person.

The gap between channels is large, and it is the most useful thing to know before you book:

  • Elite of the Seas publishes its rack rates: the Junior Suite costs 803 USD per double cabin for 2D1N, about 400 per person. On GetYourGuide the same ship shows from $125 per person for the cheapest cabin and date. Always compare the same cabin, date and unit.
  • Azura sells direct at 380 USD per person (Baylight Suite), 516 (Horizon) and 780 (Imperial), including entrance tickets, service charge and VAT. Klook shows it from $176.
  • Capella quotes from 490 USD per cabin for two people, 2D1N, VAT included, Hanoi transfer extra.
  • Paradise Grand advertises from 300 USD per cabin.

Which luxury cruise to book

Our luxury picks for Lan Ha

1

Best value in the class

A 2022 steel ship with 35 cabins, a pool and free shared limousine from Hanoi. Thousands of reviews and one of the lowest platform prices in the class.

2

Newest ship, best bathrooms

Azura launched in December 2025: all 30 cabins have a bathtub and balcony. The high rating comes from a new ship, so expect it to settle.

3

Same office as Azura, lower price

Aspira has 22 suites with balcony or terrace, the same Lot 38 lounge and the same timetable. The direct fare excludes VAT.

4

Big suites, big ship

Every Celina cabin is at least 45 m² with a bathtub, but with 62 suites it is the busiest ship in the class and still has few reviews.

For a small-ship stay with no crowds, Heritage Line Ginger or Ylang is the choice if your budget allows it. Book them direct at heritage-line.com. Families with children under 5 must look elsewhere: Heritage Line does not accept them, while Heritage Binh Chuan offers cribs and children's meals.

A luxury 2D1N on Lan Ha, hour by hour

The luxury programme follows the same pattern as any 2D1N, with more time on board and better cabins. These are Azura's official times. Elite, Capella and Celina differ by 15–30 minutes and in the order of the cave and the lagoon.

Azura 2D1N
  1. Hanoi pickup (if you booked the shuttle)about 2.5–3 h to Tuan Chau

  2. Check-in at Lot 38, Tuan Chaupassport needed

  3. Speedboat to the ship, cabin check-in, lunchsailing out through Ha Long waters

  4. Swim or kayak at Ao Ech (Frog Lake)kayak depends on the current rule

  5. Sunset tea, buy two drinks and get one free

  6. Cooking class

  7. Dinner; ship anchors for the nightkaraoke or squid fishing after

  8. Dark and Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boatday 2

  9. Check-out and brunch while sailing backsettle the bar bill

  10. Back at Tuan ChauHanoi about 15:00

Day 2 is effectively half a morning. If the ship is the reason you are paying more, a 3-day, 2-night cruise gives you a full extra day. On a 3D2N, day 2 is usually spent on a separate day boat to Viet Hai village with a beach or lagoon stop, and you may share that boat with guests from other ships.

Routes and piers: why you start in Ha Long

Almost every luxury Lan Ha ship checks in at Tuan Chau International Marina in Ha Long, and each line has its own numbered lounge. From there the ship sails 1–1.5 hours through Ha Long waters before it reaches Lan Ha. Celina and Paradise Grand do it differently: a speedboat takes you from Tuan Chau to the ship anchored near Gia Luan on north Cat Ba, which saves the slow transit.

Since 1 April 2026 overnight ships may cross between the two bays on four licensed routes, so "Ha Long and Lan Ha" itineraries are now legal combined routes. Read which stops are on each side: Dark and Bright Cave, Tra Bau, Ao Ech, Ba Trai Dao and Viet Hai are in Lan Ha. Ba Ham lake, Cua Van and Tien Ong are in Ha Long. Our piers guide explains each lounge and transfer, and Lan Ha vs Ha Long compares the two bays.

Cabins: balcony, bathtub and suite sizes

All the luxury ships above have a balcony or terrace on every cabin. Bathtubs vary:

  • Azura: bathtub in all 30 cabins, 34 m² as standard, 66 m² Imperial Suites with a private terrace and sauna.
  • Elite of the Seas: bathtub in every cabin, from 26 m² (Senior) up to the 88 m² President Suite.
  • Celina of the Sea: every suite is 45 m² or larger with an ocean-view bathtub and walk-in shower.
  • Capella: suites from 32 m² up to a 92 m² Owner Suite. Check the bathtub per category.
  • Paradise Grand: the 28 m² Grand Balcony cabins have a shower only. For a bathtub, book a Grand Balcony Suite or a Captain's View Grand Suite.

What the fare includes, and what costs extra

Luxury fares normally include the cabin, four meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast and brunch), the Lan Ha sightseeing fee, an English-speaking guide, the cave visit by bamboo or rowing boat, a cooking class, tai chi and squid fishing. Check these points before you compare prices:

  • Drinks are almost never included. Expect a buy-one-get-one or buy-two-get-one happy hour and a bar bill to settle on day 2.
  • VAT: Capella, Orchid and Azura include it. Aspira excludes it.
  • The Lan Ha fee: Heritage Line excludes it. The overnight fee is 400,000 VND per adult for one night and 600,000 VND for two (children 300,000 and 500,000 VND).
  • The Hanoi transfer: Elite's shared limousine is free; Scarlet Pearl's limousine costs 35 USD per person; Celina's shuttle with lunch costs 1,500,000 VND per person. Platform listings often include a shuttle; direct fares often do not.
  • Holiday nights: gala surcharges apply on 24 and 31 December and at Tết, the Lunar New Year. Peony charges about $60 per person; Elite adds 20% on Tết nights.
  • Card fees: 3% at Elite, 4.5% at Peony and Orchid.

Booking a luxury cruise: direct or GetYourGuide and Klook

Direct booking gets you the operator's full cabin menu, but cancellation is strict. Elite of the Seas is free until 7 days before and 100% after that, as its cruise policy shows. Heritage Line takes full payment at booking and charges 100% inside 15 days. Orchid charges fees from 29 days out. Most GetYourGuide listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before and offer reserve now, pay later. On Klook, the rules differ per activity.

That matters, because the authorities can stop all departures for a storm. See how to book.

Safety, weather and the kayak question

  • Kayaking. Kayaking in the Cat Ba bays has been under an official suspension since November 2024, re-confirmed in late 2025 (VnExpress). Some ships offer it only in a designated area or replace it with a bamboo boat, tender or swim. If kayaking is your reason to book, ask the operator in writing. More in our kayaking guide.
  • Life jackets. Since June 2026, after a fatal collision near Van Boi, Cat Hai Special Zone (đặc khu Cát Hải) requires every passenger to wear a certified life jacket from boarding and throughout the trip, including on tenders (Tien Phong).
  • Storms. Departures are stopped by the port authorities, not by the cruise line. Ships flag May–July and the storm season runs to November. Keep a buffer day before an international flight. October and November are the driest months; see best time to visit.

FAQ

What is the best luxury cruise in Lan Ha Bay?

For value, Elite of the Seas: a 2022 steel ship with 35 balcony cabins and a pool, often from $125 per person on GetYourGuide. For the newest cabins, Azura (December 2025, a bathtub in every cabin). For a small, quiet ship, Heritage Line Ginger or Ylang, at a much higher price.

How much does a Lan Ha Bay luxury cruise cost?

Most luxury ships sell from $155 to $225 per person for one night, twin share. Heritage Line Ylang is about $495 per person a night. Drinks, spa and tips are extra, and the Hanoi shuttle is extra on many direct fares.

Are there 6-star cruises in Lan Ha Bay?

Not officially. Vietnam's rating for accommodation vessels is voluntary and goes from 1★ to 5★. "6-star" is a marketing label, so judge the ship by its age, cabin size and hull.

Do luxury Lan Ha cruises leave from Hai Phong or Cat Ba?

Almost all check in at Tuan Chau in Ha Long and sail 1–1.5 hours into Lan Ha. Celina of the Sea and Paradise Grand take you by speedboat to the ship anchored near Gia Luan on Cat Ba. Your voucher names the lounge.

Is it cheaper to book a luxury cruise direct?

Not always. Elite's direct Junior Suite costs 803 USD per double cabin, while GetYourGuide shows the ship from $125 per person on some dates. Direct bookings also have stricter cancellation rules, so compare the same cabin, date and inclusions.
