Magenta Cruise review: is it still sailing, and what to book instead

Magenta Cruise is a 26-cabin steel ship that agencies list on a Tuan Chau – Lan Ha route, but it has no working official website and no listing on the big platforms. Treat it as unconfirmed: ask for proof it sails your date, or book a comparable Lan Ha ship you can verify.

Magenta Cruise is marketed under "Halong Bay", but its listed route runs from Tuan Chau into Lan Ha Bay. The honest answer to "should I book Magenta?" is: only if the seller can show it is running on your date. Everything known about the ship comes from one agency page; magentacruise.com does not resolve, no other official site was found, and none of the platforms we track sells it under its own name.

Pros

  • Steel hull, 65 m, launched November 2019 (agency data).
  • Every cabin has a window and a balcony.
  • The 3-day route includes Cat Ba National Park, the Cat Co and Tung Thu beaches and Viet Hai village.

Cons

  • No official website: magentacruise.com does not resolve.
  • No operator name, price list or cancellation terms published.
  • Not sold under its own name on GetYourGuide, Klook or Trip.com.
  • "5-star luxury" is the ship's own label, with no official rating behind it.

What we know about Magenta

The only detailed source is an agency, Asia King Travel. It describes Magenta as:

  • launched in November 2019;
  • 26 cabins for up to 60 passengers, each with a window and a balcony and a "standing bathtub";
  • a steel single hull, 65 m × 10.5 m, with one Caterpillar 540 HP engine;
  • departing from Tuan Chau Island, check-in 12:30, check-out 09:30, back on shore at 12:00;
  • served by a daily Hanoi luxury bus leaving 08:20–08:45.

The agency publishes no prices. It calls the ship "5-star luxury", but Vietnam's star rating for cruise ships is voluntary, and no Lan Ha ship has been confirmed with an official 5-star decision. "5-star" here is marketing.

Is Magenta Cruise still running?

We cannot confirm it. We tried magentacruise.com, magentacruises.com and magentacruise.vn: none is an operator site. There is no Magenta product in the GetYourGuide, Klook or Trip.com catalogues we track. That does not prove the ship has stopped; small Ha Long and Lan Ha ships are often sold only through agencies. But it does mean:

  • you cannot read the operator's own terms;
  • you cannot compare the agency price with a direct or platform price;
  • reviews you find may be old.

Be careful with generic platform listings such as "2-Day Ha Long, Lan Ha Bay Luxury Cruise with Balcony & Bathtub". They are sold by agencies under generic titles, and nothing shows they are Magenta. If a listing does not name the ship, assume it is not the ship you are searching for.

The route: Tuan Chau to Lan Ha

Per the agency, Magenta boards at Tuan Chau in Ha Long and sails into Lan Ha. Like other Tuan Chau ships, that means 1–1.5 hours in Ha Long waters before the Lan Ha anchorage, and the activities are on the Lan Ha side.

The agency's 3-day "Discovery Halong Bay – Lan Ha Bay" programme goes further than most:

  • Tuan Chau → Lan Ha → Ben Beo dock on Cat Ba;
  • Cat Ba National Park: Kim Giao forest, Ngu Lam peak, Trung Trang cave;
  • Cat Ba town beaches: Cat Co 1 and 3, Tung Thu;
  • Viet Hai village.

That is a lot of Cat Ba for a cruise. If you want those sights with less risk, you can also stay on Cat Ba Island and take day boats.

Any kayak on the programme is subject to the official kayak suspension in the Cat Ba bays, in force since November 2024 and re-confirmed in late 2025. Ask in writing.

How to check a Magenta booking

How to check a Magenta booking

  1. Ask the seller for the ship's registration number and a recent photo with the name on the hull or life rings.
  2. Ask for the exact meeting point and lounge number at Tuan Chau.
  3. Get the price per person, what is included (transfer, fees, VAT) and the cancellation schedule in writing.
  4. Ask what replaces kayaking and how a storm cancellation is refunded.
  5. Pay a deposit only to an agency with a published licence and address, never in full to a chat contact.

Storm cancellations are ordered by the port authority, not the operator, and refunds follow the seller's terms. Direct and agency bookings in this market often charge 100% inside 7 days; platforms usually allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Read how to book and luxury cruises for the wider picture.

It calls itself "5-star luxury", but Vietnam's star rating for ships is voluntary and no official rating has been confirmed for any Lan Ha ship.
