A Lan Ha Bay cruise of 2 days and 1 night is the most popular way to see the bay (vịnh Lan Hạ), the quieter karst water east of Cat Ba Island, south of Ha Long. It is also the format where expectations most often go wrong. You get lunch, one main excursion, a sunset, dinner, a night at anchor among the islets, tai chi at 06:00 and a short morning outing. By 11:00–12:00 on day 2 you are back at the pier.

That is enough for most first-time visitors. This page shows what the day really looks like hour by hour, which pier you actually leave from, what it costs on each platform and direct, and how to tell a real Lan Ha ship from a generic "5-Star Cruise with Balcony" listing.

Lan Ha Bay 2 days 1 night itinerary, hour by hour

The schedule below is built from the published 2D1N programmes of Peony, Mon Chéri, Elite of the Seas, Aspira and Azura. Times move by 15–30 minutes between ships, but the shape is almost identical everywhere.

Day 1 and day 2 on a typical Lan Ha overnight cruise
  1. Pickup in Hanoi's Old Quarter07:30–08:35 depending on the ship; the shuttle is extra on many direct bookings

  2. Check-in at the cruise lounge in Tuan ChauPassport needed; life jacket on from boarding

  3. Tender or speedboat to the shipThe ship is often anchored away from the marina

  4. Lunch while sailing toward Lan Ha1–1.5 h through Ha Long waters first

  5. Main activityDark and Bright Cave by bamboo boat, or swimming at Tra Bau or Ao Ech

  6. Sunset, happy hour, cooking classUsually spring rolls; drinks are buy-one-get-one or buy-two-get-one

  7. DinnerSet menu or buffet

  8. Squid fishing, karaoke or a filmThen the ship stays at anchor in Lan Ha

  9. Tai chi on the sundeckLight breakfast after

  10. Short morning excursionDark and Bright Cave, a swim stop, or Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba

  11. Check-out and brunch while sailing backSettle the bar bill now

  12. Disembark at the pier11:00–12:00

  13. Back in Hanoi14:00–16:00 depending on traffic

Be honest with yourself about day 2: it is half a morning, and part of it is breakfast and packing. Of roughly 24 hours on board, two outings happen. The rest is sailing, meals and time on deck, which is the point for many people and a letdown for those who expected a full second day. If you want a full day deep in the bay, that is what a 3 days 2 nights cruise adds.

Where Lan Ha overnight cruises leave from

Most big Lan Ha cruise lines check in at Tuan Chau in Ha Long; a few boats and most Cat Ba day trips start on the Hai Phong side. Check your voucher. Each line has its own numbered lounge at Tuan Chau International Marina: Peony and Mon Chéri No. 34, Aspira and Azura Lot 38, La Pandora Slot 26, Celina 41A, Capella 20B, Orchid Lot 32.

From Tuan Chau the ship sails 1–1.5 hours through Ha Long waters before it reaches Lan Ha, or a speedboat takes you to a ship already anchored near Gia Luan, on the north tip of Cat Ba. That is why so many listings say "Ha Long & Lan Ha" in the title.

The exception is Venezia, whose two small boats (10 cabins and 5 cabins) board at Ben Beo (bến Bèo, "bến" means pier) near Cat Ba town. If you are already staying on Cat Ba, that saves you the long drive to Ha Long. Peony and Mon Chéri also take Cat Ba guests at Gia Luan pier, waiting 12:30–13:00 for a speedboat, for a surcharge.

Three ways the same "2D1N Lan Ha" plays out

Most brands follow one of three programmes. Knowing which one your ship runs tells you more than the star label in the title.

Tra Bau and Trung Trang Cave (Peony, Mon Chéri)

Peony and Mon Chéri belong to the same operator, Big Bay Group, and run word-for-word the same programme from lounge No. 34. Day 1 ends at the Tra Bau area for a swim (kayaking is listed too). On day 2 the ship moves to Gia Luan jetty and you ride about 30 minutes by road to Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba Island. That is a land excursion, not more bay time, and there is no Ha Long cave and no Dark and Bright Cave on this 2D1N. The full programme is on Peony's 2-day page. Our Peony review covers the two yachts and their cabins.

Dark and Bright Cave by bamboo boat (Aspira, Azura, Elite, Celina)

The second template puts the Dark and Bright Caves (hang Sáng – hang Tối, "hang" means cave) at the heart of the trip: local rowers take you through by bamboo boat. Aspira does it on day 1 and kayaks on day 2; Azura and Elite of the Seas swim at Ao Ech (Frog Lagoon) on day 1 and row through the caves on day 2; Celina of the Sea does the cave on day 1 and Tra Bau on day 2. This is the most "Lan Ha" of the three, and the caves are firmly on the Lan Ha side, not in Ha Long.

Ba Trai Dao and Viet Hai from Cat Ba (Venezia)

Venezia's small boats leave Ben Beo and head for Coc Ngoi, Cua Dong and Ba Trai Dao ("Three Peaches") beach, which is often a swim stop when access, tide and weather allow. On day 2 a tender takes you to Viet Hai, a village inside the national park with no road, where you ride a bike or an electric cart. No cave and no Ha Long water at all. It is the closest thing to a full Lan Ha programme in one night, on a much smaller boat.

Lan Ha Bay cruise 1 night price

All prices below are "from" prices per person, twin share, as shown today. The same ship can cost very different amounts on different channels, so always compare the same cabin, date and inclusions.

Type of 2D1N Typical "from" price per person
Cat Ba-side boats on GetYourGuide $96–116
Agency budget ships $120–133
Mid-range ships $124–160
Luxury ships mostly $155–225, up to about $495

On the platforms today, the cheapest named ship is La Pandora on Klook from $104, generic balcony listings on GetYourGuide start at $110, Elite of the Seas is from $125, Aspira from $146 and the new Azura from $176. See the budget cruises and luxury cruises guides for each band.

Platform vs direct: the gap is real

Direct rack rates are often far higher than platform "from" prices. Elite of the Seas publishes its own table: a Junior Suite for 2D1N costs USD 803 per double cabin direct, while GetYourGuide shows Elite from $125 per person. Azura's own site lists its cheapest Baylight Suite at USD 380 per person (with VAT, entrance tickets and service charge included), against $176 on Klook. La Pandora's site starts at USD 295 from Hanoi.

Platform prices are the cheapest cabin on the cheapest date, so the gap shrinks when you pick a better cabin or a holiday night. It does not disappear. The other direction also happens: Venezia sells direct at USD 125 per person from Cat Ba, or USD 145 with the round-trip Hanoi bus, close to its GetYourGuide price.

What the fare includes and what costs extra

Almost every Lan Ha 2D1N includes the cabin, four meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast, brunch), a welcome drink, the bay sightseeing fees, an English-speaking guide, the main excursion, tai chi, the cooking class and squid fishing. The overnight bay fee of 400,000 VND per adult for one night is normally in the price. Heritage Line is the known exception and lists the Lan Ha admission fee separately.

What you usually pay on top:

  • Drinks. Almost never included. Some ships give tea or coffee at meals, and Elite of the Seas includes soft drinks, beer and cocktails at lunch and dinner. Ask about corkage before bringing wine.
  • The Hanoi shuttle, unless the listing says it is included. Elite runs a free shared limousine; agencies typically charge USD 35–40 return; Celina charges 1,500,000 VND per person with lunch.
  • VAT on some ships: Aspira, Era and Venezia (8%) quote without it.
  • Card fees of 3–4.5% on direct bookings.
  • Holiday surcharges: Peony adds USD 60 per person for the gala dinner on 24 and 31 December and Tết (Lunar New Year); Elite adds 20% on Tết nights.
  • Spa and tips. Tips are not mandatory.

Children usually travel free under 4 (one per cabin) and pay 75% from about 4 or 5 to 11; from 12 they pay the adult fare. Bands vary: La Pandora charges the adult fare from 9.

"5-Star Cruise with Balcony": find the real ship

Many of the biggest 2D1N listings on GetYourGuide do not name a ship. Titles such as "2 Days Lan Ha & Halong Bay 5-Star Cruise with Balcony" are sold by agencies that place you on one of several boats. That is not a scam in itself, but the ship can change, and so can the route. Vietnam's star rating for cruise ships is voluntary and stops at 5 stars; "6-star" is a sales label and no ship has a confirmed official 4- or 5-star decision.

How to check the real ship before you pay

  1. Read the "activity provider" on the GetYourGuide page. An agency name means the ship may vary.
  2. Check the meeting point: a pier and lounge number (for example Lot 38 at Tuan Chau) points to one specific line.
  3. Look at the photos for the ship's name on the hull or on the life rings.
  4. Compare the cabin size and cabin count with the ship's own site. Elite has 35 cabins, Aspira 22, Azura 30.
  5. Read recent reviews for the boat's name, and check that it matches the title.
  6. Message the supplier through the platform and ask three things in writing: ship name, steel or wooden hull, year built. If the answer says "or similar", the ship can change.

Named ships with their own listings, such as Elite of the Seas (g463074) on GetYourGuide or La Pandora, Aspira and Azura on Klook, avoid the guesswork. Our how to book guide covers the platforms and cancellation rules in more detail.

2D1N, 3D2N or a day cruise?

Pick one night if you have a tight north-Vietnam loop and want the sunset, the night at anchor and a quiet early morning. It is the best value per hour on the water, and it fits between Hanoi and Ninh Binh.

Pick two nights if the bay is the main reason for your trip. Day 2 of a 3D2N is a full day on a separate day boat to Viet Hai village and a lagoon, the part one-nighters never see. Be careful with "3-day" listings: many are one day in Ninh Binh plus a 1-night cruise.

Pick a day cruise if you are staying on Cat Ba. Local day boats from Ben Beo cover the same caves and lagoons for a fraction of the price, without the 5-hour round trip to Ha Long. See Lan Ha Bay day cruises.

Pros

  • One sunset and one sunrise on the bay
  • Fits a 3- or 4-day north-Vietnam trip
  • Platform prices from about $104 per person
  • Night at anchor among the islets, away from the day boats

Cons

  • Day 2 is only half a morning
  • Two outings in total, sometimes one on land
  • About 5–6 hours on the road from Hanoi and back
  • Ships from Tuan Chau spend the first hour in Ha Long waters

Kayaking, weather and safety rules

Kayaking. Kayaking in the Cat Ba bays has been under an official suspension since Nov 2024, re-confirmed in late 2025. Some ships offer it only in a designated area or replace it with a bamboo boat, tender or swim. Ask the operator in writing. The original order was reported by VnExpress. Most 2D1N listings still show kayaks; treat the bamboo boat as the realistic plan. More on kayaking in Lan Ha.

Life jackets. Since a fatal collision between two day boats at Van Boi on 14 June 2026, Cat Hai Special Zone (đặc khu Cát Hải, the local authority) requires every passenger to wear a certified life jacket from boarding and throughout the trip, with a crew safety briefing (Tiền Phong). Expect it on the tender to the ship and on every small boat.

Storms. Sailings are stopped by the port authorities, not by the cruise line. In storm season, roughly June to November, cancellations often come the evening before or the same morning. Typical operator terms give a 100% refund if you have not sailed, and a shortened trip is billed for what you used. Keep a buffer day before an international flight.

Weather by month. October and November are the driest and sunniest months. February to April bring drizzle and fog, which can hide the karsts. May to September is hot and wet, with August the wettest month. December and January are dry but cool, with nights around 14–16 °C. Domestic crowds peak around 30 April – 1 May, on summer weekends and at Tết. See the best time to visit.

Ask about the hull. Wooden hulls are still legal, and both Vietnamese boat incidents of 2026 involved wooden boats. Elite of the Seas states a steel double hull; for other ships, ask "steel hull? year built? ship name on the voucher?"

Booking and cancelling a 2D1N

Direct bookings are strict. Elite of the Seas is free to cancel until 7 days before and then charges 100%; Peony's pages give both a 14-day rule and a tiered table, so check the terms you actually sign. Orchid, Sena and Era charge fees from 30 days out. Deposits of 30–50% are common, plus card fees.

The platforms set terms per product. Many GetYourGuide listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before and offer reserve now, pay later; Klook's rules differ per activity, so read them on the page. For a trip in storm season, that flexibility is the honest reason to book through a platform. Operators register every passenger with the port authorities: most ask for passport details 24 hours ahead and the original passport at check-in.

FAQ

Is a Lan Ha Bay cruise 2 days 1 night enough?

For most travelers, yes. You get one afternoon excursion, a sunset, a night at anchor and a short morning outing. If the bay is the highlight of your trip, a 3 days 2 nights cruise adds a full day to Viet Hai village and the lagoons.

How much does a Lan Ha Bay overnight cruise cost?

On the platforms today, named ships start from $104 per person on Klook (La Pandora) and generic balcony cruises from $110 on GetYourGuide. Mid-range ships are typically $124–160 and luxury ships $155–225 per person. Drinks, VAT on some ships and holiday surcharges come on top.

Where does a Lan Ha Bay 1 night cruise depart from?

Most check in at Tuan Chau International Marina in Ha Long, each line at its own numbered lounge, then sail or take a speedboat into Lan Ha. Venezia boards at Ben Beo near Cat Ba town. Your voucher names the pier.

Can I kayak on a Lan Ha overnight cruise?

Kayaking has been under an official suspension in the Cat Ba bays since November 2024. Some ships offer it in a designated area or replace it with a bamboo boat or a swim. Ask the operator in writing before you book if kayaking matters to you.

What time do you get back to Hanoi?

Ships disembark between 11:00 and 12:00 on day 2, and the shuttle usually reaches Hanoi between 14:00 and 16:00.

Is the bay fee included in the cruise price?

Usually yes. The overnight fee is 400,000 VND per adult for one night (300,000 VND per child). Heritage Line is an exception and lists the Lan Ha admission fee separately.
