Ginger is a small, high-end ship with a well-chosen Lan Ha program: you cycle through Viet Hai village on the afternoon you board, sleep at anchor in Lan Ha and paddle or swim at Frog Lake the next morning. It costs more than twice what well-reviewed platform-sold luxury ships charge, and its terms are strict, so it suits travelers who want a 12-suite ship and book months ahead.

Ginger cruise Lan Ha Bay: which Heritage is this?

Ginger belongs to Heritage Line, a company best known for river cruises on the Mekong and in Myanmar. On Ha Long's side of the coast it runs three ships: Ginger (1 night, Lan Ha), Ylang (2 nights, Lan Ha) and Violet (Bai Tu Long Bay, not Lan Ha).

It has nothing to do with Heritage Binh Chuan, which is run by Heritage Cruises (Lux Cruises Group). See our Heritage Binh Chuan review if that is the ship you mean.

The ship and suites

Ginger launched in June 2018 as a 12-suite junk-style ship for Lan Ha Bay. It has three decks (Main, Upper and Terrace), a pool on the terrace deck and a spa that takes up the whole stern.

Suite Size Notes
Junior Suite 37 m² Main deck, private balcony
Signature Suite 37 m² Upper deck, private balcony
Regent Suite 50 m² Front balcony, Jacuzzi, double vanity

Vietnam's official rating for ships is voluntary and stops at 5 stars, so any "6-star" tag an agency adds is marketing.

The route: Viet Hai and Frog Lake

You meet at the Heritage Line lounge at Tuan Chau Marina in Ha Long and transfer to the ship by speedboat. You make your own way to the lounge: Heritage Line gives about 2.5 hours from Hanoi and about 1 hour from Hai Phong.

Day 1: lunch on board, then the ship lands near Cat Ba and you cycle through Viet Hai village, a car-free village of about 90 households inside Cat Ba National Park. Back on board: cooking class, dinner and squid fishing at the overnight anchorage in Lan Ha.

Day 2: tai chi, then kayaking at Frog Lake (Ao Ech), brunch and the speedboat back to Tuan Chau.

There is no cave on the program, which means no Dark and Bright Caves. Ao Ech is the area reported as still open to kayaks, but this is unconfirmed: kayaking in the Cat Ba bays has been under an official suspension since November 2024, re-confirmed in late 2025. Some ships offer it only in a designated area or replace it with a bamboo boat, tender or swim. Ask the operator in writing. What travelers should check

We do not have a reliable summary of guest reviews for Ginger. Before booking, check:

  1. Children: under-5s are not accepted without special permission; ages 5–11 pay 50% sharing with two adults (75% with one), 12 and over pay the adult rate. A USD 50 child surcharge applies on Christmas and New Year's Eve.
  2. Which ship sails: in a marked period Ginger runs the 2-night program instead of Ylang.
  3. The transfer: book the Hanoi shuttle or a private car separately.
  4. Documents: Heritage Line asks for a valid passport and your booking confirmation.

How to book and cancel

Book on heritage-line.com. Full payment is due at booking. Cancellation: free 45 days or more before, 20% at 31–45 days, 50% at 16–30 days, 100% inside 15 days.

Weather rules are clearer than most: if the cruise is fully cancelled by 12:00 on embarkation day you get a full refund; if a 1-night cruise sails partly (at least 4 hours) you are refunded minus USD 100 per person; other force-majeure cases give future credit, not cash.
