Heritage Binh Chuan review: the 20-suite Heritage Cruises ship on Lan Ha Bay

Heritage Binh Chuan is a 20-suite boutique ship run by Heritage Cruises (Lux Cruises Group), not by Heritage Line. Every suite has a balcony and a bathtub, the route is pure Lan Ha, and the only real drawback is that you must book direct or through an agency.

Heritage Binh Chuan is one of the better-equipped ships on the Lan Ha route: 20 balcony suites with bathtubs, a pool, a spa and a cinema, and a 2 days 1 night program that includes both the Dark and Bright Caves and a beach stop. It is not sold on GetYourGuide, Klook or Trip.com, and the official site publishes no price, so you compare by quote.

Heritage cruise Lan Ha Bay: which Heritage?

There are two unrelated companies with "Heritage" in the name on this bay:

  • Heritage Cruises, part of Lux Cruises Group, runs one ship: Heritage Binh Chuan. Website heritagecruises.com. This page.
  • Heritage Line runs Ginger and Ylang on Lan Ha and Violet in Bai Tu Long Bay. Website heritage-line.com. See our reviews of Heritage Line Ginger and Heritage Line Ylang.

Neither site mentions the other, and "Heritage Line Binh Chuan" does not exist. If an agency quote says so, ask which ship you are booking.

Lux Cruises Group (LuxGroup) was founded in 2005 and also runs Emperor Cruises. Heritage Cruises calls itself Vietnam's first boutique cruise line; that is its own claim.

The ship and cabins

Heritage Binh Chuan was inaugurated in late 2019. It is named after the Bình Chuẩn, the ship that made the first coastal voyage from Hai Phong to Saigon in 1919. It carries up to 60 passengers in 20 suites on the first and second decks. All have a private balcony with two sunbeds and a bathroom with a rain shower and a bathtub.

Suite Size Number Deck
Delta Suite 33 m² 6 First
Ocean Suite 33 m² 10 Second
Captain Suite 38 m² 2 First, large balcony
Regal Suite 46 m² 2 Second; connects with an Ocean Suite (79 m²)

On board: a pool on the third deck, the White Lotus Spa (paid), a sauna, a gym, an art gallery, two restaurants and a cinema. Families get cribs, high chairs and kids' meals. Vietnam's star ratings for ships are voluntary and go up to 5 stars only, so ignore any "6-star" label an agency attaches.

The route: Lan Ha, from Tuan Chau

Heritage Binh Chuan checks in at its lounge at Tuan Chau International Marina, Lot 28B, in Ha Long. Like most branded Lan Ha cruises, it then sails through Ha Long waters for about an hour before reaching Lan Ha. Every named stop is on the Lan Ha side:

  • Day 1: Ba Trai Dao beach (weather permitting) or Tra Bau lagoon from May to September, for a kayak or swim.
  • Day 2: bamboo boat through the Dark and Bright Caves.

Ba Trai Dao's access is disputed, so treat it as a swim stop when access, tide and weather allow. Kayaking in the Cat Ba bays has been under an official suspension since November 2024, re-confirmed in late 2025. Some ships offer it only in a designated area or replace it with a bamboo boat, tender or swim. Ask the operator in writing. Background: VnExpress report on the kayak suspension.

Heritage Binh Chuan price

The official site sells through a booking engine and shows no prices. HalongBayTours.com lists the ship from USD 180 per person on its Lan Ha page. That puts it in the upper part of the Lan Ha luxury band, where most "from" prices sit between USD 155 and 225.

Included: welcome drink, speedboat transfer, sightseeing tickets (so the Lan Ha fee is covered), all meals on the program, fruit, water, tea and coffee in the suite, kayak and bamboo boat, and service charges. Excluded: transfer to the harbor, drinks, massages, tips, and "surcharges" including a fuel surcharge. Ask for the total with these in writing.

What travelers should check

HalongBayTours shows a score of 9.7 from 331 reviews, but agencies do not publish how their scores are calculated. Before booking, check:

  1. The ship name: Heritage Binh Chuan, Heritage Cruises, Lot 28B Tuan Chau.
  2. The total price: shuttle, drinks and fuel surcharge.
  3. What replaces kayaking and Ba Trai Dao on your date.
  4. Passport details: operators register guests with the authorities, usually 24 hours ahead.

How to book and cancel

Book on heritagecruises.com or through an agency. Weather cancellations are decided by the local authorities (the line says about 5 days per year), and Heritage Cruises offers a free date change where possible. Ask for the written cancellation scale before paying: booking direct is usually much stricter than the 24-hour free cancellation common on GetYourGuide. In storm season, from June to November, keep a buffer day before an international flight. More: how to book a Lan Ha cruise.
